Carol's Story

Text size

It is with great grief and sorrow that the family of Carol Sue Halbrook announce her death. Carol was born during WW II to father LTC Curtis Hunter and mother Elizabeth Crowley Hunter in Forth Worth Texas. As an Army “brat” she moved with her family during her youth to various locations including Camp Carson, Colorado; Germany; Memphis, Tennessee, and finally Alton, Illinois. Carol graduated from Alton high school where she was a member of the band. She went on to college at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. There she was part of the aquatic swim team and met her husband Col Earl Halbrook. They were married for 50 years. Carol traveled the world as a military spouse and was an avid volunteer. She served as a girl scout leader, YMCA swim instructor, Red Cross Volunteer and local tour guide. Notably, she provided invaluable support to young soldiers families while they were deployed to Operation Desert Storm. Carol was a talented stained glass artist and has works hanging in many military family homes throughout the country as well as the King William historical district in San Antonio, TX. For the last several years she was a passionate scuba diver and dove many of the WWII battle sites in the South Pacific. Her most recent passion was as a volunteer at the “Fisher Houses” at FT Sam Houston Texas; Fisher houses provide housing and support for the families of wounded service members who are receiving medical care at the Brooke Army Medical Center. Carol’s greatest dedication was to be an inspiration and role model for her children and grand children. Carol is survived by her husband Earl, daughters Laura and Carol Lynn and grandchildren Megan, Mariah, Rebekah and Adam. She is also survived by her brother CDR Curtis S Hunter. Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, at 11:45 am, at Funeral Caring Funeral Homes, 6500 IH 35 North San Antonio, TX. Burial will be at the FT Sam Houston National Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fisher Houses.
