Decatur - Gary Leon Ray, 75, formerly of Decatur, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2018.
Gary was born in Decatur, IL, May 8, 1942, to Jesse B. and Mildred I. (Ladow) Ray and was raised by Jesse and Agnes M. "Peggy" Finley after his mother passed away. A U.S. Navy veteran, Gary was an original crew member of the U.S.S. Enterprise and served during the Cuban Missile crisis. After his time in the Navy, Gary joined the Air National Guard retiring as a Master Seargent in 1991. He graduated from Stephen Decatur High School and worked for Marvel-Schebler/Borg Warner. He married Shirley J. Muzzy December 20, 1980.
Gary is survived by his wife, Shirley; children: Susan (Steve) Koontz, Marsha (Dan) Dial, Alan (Lisa) Ray, Angie (Bruce) Griepenstroh and Matthew Ray; grandchildren: Kayla (Buzz) Robinett, Olivia (Tim) Oller, Shae'lee Dial, Shelby Dial, Torre Koontz, Owen Ray, Blake Griepenstroh, Sam Griepenstroh, Nicole Crane, Natalie Ray and Austin Ray; great grandchildren: Aiden Dial, Bryce Robinett and Ruger Robinett; brother, Pat Ray; half-brother, James Ray; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian Crane and brother, Dennis "Mick" Ray.
Funeral service to celebrate his life will be 11:30 Friday, January 19, 2018, in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home; visitation will begin at 10 AM. Burial with military rites will take place in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
