James's Story

Text size

James Marshall Harkins of Shelbyville, Illinois, made his journey to Heaven on May 22, 2017, while surrounded by family at Decatur Memorial Hospital following a 5-year battle with colon cancer. He was 62.
Jim, known to his many friends as Harks, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on Sept. 27, 1954, to retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Jack Harkins and his wife Mary.
Jim spent more than 40 years with his lifelong love, Cindy. The two married in Long Lake, Illinois, on Nov. 19, 1977, and raised four children together: Gina, Tim, Greg and Eric.
Jim is survived by his wife, four children, son-in-law Steve, daughters-in-law Susan and Kati, and two grandchildren, Jack and Ava. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim worked in the Environmental Health and Safety Labs at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago and Abbott Park for more than three decades. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends, or when he had a fishing pole in hand on Lake Michigan or Lake Shelbyville. He never missed a Chicago Bears game and was thrilled to see the Chicago Cubs win the World Series in what would be the final baseball season of his life.
He graduated Warren Township High School in 1972 where he played football and wrestled. He also studied chemistry at the College of Lake County where he earned an associate's degree.
Jim's family and friends will remember him always, especially when stargazing around a campfire or while repairing something with his favorite tool: duct tape. Jim will forever be remembered for his strong faith in God, positive attitude and grace in the face of true adversity, and his calm, kind demeanor.
Jim was an avid supporter of several charity organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. For those interested in making donations in Jim's name, contributions can be made to his wife and his family will disperse them to his favorite causes.

Visitation will be from 4-8PM Thursday, May 25,2017 at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83). Funeral services will commence at 7PM Thursday. INFO 847-395-4000. Please sign our online guestbook for Jim at www.strangfh.com
