Leorah's Story

Leorah Clotiel Johnston, 104, of Decatur, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away peacefully at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Imboden Creek Living Center, Decatur. IL. Private family funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.
Mrs. Johnston was born June 2, 1912, on a farm southeast of Shelbyville, the daughter of True and Stella (Cochran) Beem. She married Kenneth W. Perryman in 1929 in Paris, IL. Following his death, she married Everett I. Johnston in 1965 in Dollville, IL.
Leorah, or Nana, as most of her friends and family called her, was a lifelong housewife who, when circumstances dictated, worked outside the home at a garment factory, as a housekeeper and at Irene's Dress Shop in Shelbyville. She enjoyed traveling and saw much of the world but enjoyed returning home most of all. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville and lived independently until age 96 when she moved to Primrose Retirement Community in Decatur and later to Imboden Gardens. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time laughing with her family.
Surviving are daughter, Barbara F. Dwyer (John), of Madison, IN; son, Larry Perryman (Pam), of Decatur; and daughter in law, Marilyn Perryman of Mattoon. Also surviving are: stepsons Robert C. Johnston (Debra) of Marco Island, FL and Thomas B. Johnston (Edie) of Burr Ridge, IL; grandchildren: Marta Johnson of Marion IN; Patricia Howard M.D. (Steve) of Houston TX; Barbara Baker (Greg) of Evansville IN; Mary Kay Dwyer of Madison IN; John Dwyer of Madison IN; David Dwyer (Julie) of Madison IN; Anne Higgins (Chris) of Madison IN; Daniel Perryman (Terri) of West Hollywood, CA; Dana Meyer (Scott) of Mattoon IL; Kimberly Beck of Sullivan; step grandchildren: Beth F. Stephenson (Scott) of Buckhead, GA; Julie Ann Johnston of Seattle, WA; Thomas B. Johnston of Seattle, WA; Melinda J. Bateman (Michael) of Dallas TX; Jeffery C. Johnston (Kara) of Decatur IL; Anthony S. Johnston (Christine) of Champaign IL; Stacia L. Pfeiffer (Jeffery) of Decatur IL; Alison L. Hopkins (David) of Clermont FL; Tracy Cole (Brian) of Menasha, WI; Jacqueline Ruscin of Nashville, TN; 28 great grandchildren; 18 great step grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; 2 great-great step grandchildren; special friends Debra Perryman of Mount Zion and Carolyn Johnston of Decatur plus many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Kenneth W. Perryman in 1963 and Everett I. Johnston in 1986; son, Robert L. Perryman; brothers, Robert Beem, Max Beem and Howard Beem.
The family also wants to express their genuine appreciation for the caring staff of Imboden Creek Living Center and Harbor Light Hospice who continuously demonstrated their affection for our mother. In her last days, both staffs provided the highest level of professional care and kindness, and for that, we are forever grateful.
