Richard Gene's Story
Richard Gene Elliott, 77, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in HSHS St. John's Hospital, Springfield, IL.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4, 2017 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Linda Trent officiating. Visitations were from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday and from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Monday. Burial was in Jordan Cemetery, near Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church or Saving Orphaned Animals both in Shelbyville, IL.
Richard was born on December 22, 1939 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Maurice Gilbert and Alice Edith (Mahnke) Elliott. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1957. Richard served in the U.S. Army Reserves in Mattoon, IL and then the Illinois National Guard. He began working as a welder for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville, IL. Richard also helped his father on their grain and livestock farm just east of Shelbyville, IL. He later worked for Gritzmacher Construction in Shelbyville, IL.
Richard continued to operate the family farm when his father passed away in 1975. He enjoyed raising cattle and sheep and retired from farming in the fall of 2013. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, near Shelbyville and Shelby County Farm Bureau. Richard served on the ASCS County Committee for Shelby County. He was also active in the Farm Home Administration in Shelby County. He married Ione Marie Irish on April 26, 1969 in Lincoln, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Ione; sons, Larry Elliott of University City, MO and Chris Elliott and wife Amanda of Shelbyville, IL; beloved grandchildren, Blair and Bryleigh Elliott of Shelbyville, IL: brother-in-law, Keith Hammond of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Nancy Irish Hectus and husband Dennis of Williamsport, IN; nephew, Tony Hammond of Shelbyville, IL; niece, Heather Smithson and husband Rob of Shelbyville, IL: great nieces and nephews, Jordan, Elliott and Isaac Smithson and Brock, Roxanne and Blake Hammond.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret Hammond; and step-father, Fred Warner.
Richard loved his family very much. He will be greatly missed.
