Surrounded by his loving family, William "Bill" Edward Hubbs, age 68, of Springfield, Illinois passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017.
Bill was born April 11, 1949 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Lewis Franklin Hubbs and Mary Bartimus Hubbs. He married Christy Lynn Sullivan on November 11, 1993.
He attended Shelbyville High School and graduated from Sangamon State University, now University of Illinois Springfield. He served in Vietnam in the United States Army Infantry (E5 Sergeant) and was a decorated war veteran. The Army awarded him with an expert rifleman ranking. He was employed by the State of Illinois, Department of Revenue (1972-1992) and the Illinois Secretary of State from 1993 until his death. He was loved by his many friends and co-workers.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He always made time for people and was incredibly caring and giving. His selflessness was amazing, and he was often described as "the nicest person I've ever known." He was a loyal Chicago Bears fan and a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. He was ecstatic to see his Cubbies win the World Series! When he found himself at the roulette wheel, Bill always bet on the number 16; Ken Hubbs, a distant cousin of Bill's, was #16 for the Chicago Cubs and was Rookie of the Year in 1962.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years Christy Sullivan of Springfield and children Jessica Savalla (John Horvath), Regan Savalla (Adam Dunne), Nathan Zimring (Candice Subaitis), and Brian Zimring. He is also survived by his two nieces Rebecca and Rachel Tolen and brother in-law Jim Tolen. He was a loving Grandfather to Kieran, Avery, Beckett, and Rowan. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ramona Tolen.
Arrangements: Memorial and military honors burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM.
